International Day for Disaster Reduction was established by the United Nations (UN) in 1989 and is observed every year on October 13th to enhance awareness among governments and people on how to take appropriate actions in the face of disasters and reduce disaster risks.

In Taiwan, September 21st has been designated as "National Disaster Prevention Day" since 1999 to raise public awareness of disaster preparedness and enhance the nation’s disaster response capabilities.
