Permaculture specifically takes ecological theories and applies them to the design of our human habitats.

How to Turn Ecological Theory into the Art of Application? Experiences and Strategies
One of the reasons I decided to master and teach Permaculture is that it specifically takes ecological theories and applies them to the design of our human habitats, i.e. the places that we live, produce our food and make things. And because most people are interested in food and health and an aesthetically pleasing living environment, the opportunities for learning-and-doing has been greatly expanded – thus the co-creation of community-focused, cooperatively managed sites featuring ecological edible landscapes and passive solar design built environments have become places for individuals as well as communities to put ecological theory into practice. The next challenge is in scaling up via distributed networks and nodes to facilitate greater exchange and support for large-scale ecological restoration projects.
